Lee Heekin
“The grid’s mythic power is that it makes us able to think
we are dealing with
materialism (or sometimes science, or logic) while at the
same time it provides
us with a release into belief (or illusion, or fiction). -
Agnes Martin
Lee Heekin’s interests lie in the investigation of the box
as representation for
Confinement. She began by examining aspects of life;
preserving the objects in
Wax and in doing so, literally illuminating these found
objects regardless of their value.
Her grids speak to the fragmentation in our world created by
labeling and categorizing. Heekin recognizes how the human
brain is conditioned to label, categorize and
compartmentalize. In order for our brains to avoid exceeding
visual capacity we lump together pictures and words for
recognition purposes. In her artwork Heekin explores the
human instinct to place value, while arranging compartments
into different configurations trying to ignore hierarchy of
information or value. Heekin’s work is driven by the
compulsion to make. This compulsion is part of her continual
method that is of handmade process.
Lee Heekin lives and works in Brooklyn, NY where she
continues to pursue an
exploration of the varying possibilities of the grid.

Rachel Hines
Dear Viewer,
I hope you get this. I seem to be continually setting up
instances, projects and experiences that are doomed to fail.
With a genuine goal of sincerity and intimacy, can
artificial circumstances give birth to such results? I hope
so. When I make the work I feel vulnerable and insecure. I
agonize over your reaction. I crave your connection, your
shared experience.
I need you. Without you there is no work. You are essential.
When you engage in the art we are co-owners and
collaborators. You are as much of an artist as I am.
You make my work.
My whole body feels the distance between us. I will continue
to set up these instances for you to engage with me. I won’t
give up hope. I’ll be here, working on how to get you closer
to me.
Yours,
Rachel

My work is concerned with creating a unique language through
which one may find new ways of communicating. This language
uses an ever-increasing vocabulary that offers a unique lens
through which to view the world we live in. My drawings
expand the accepted modes of exchange, allowing new methods
to disseminate, translate, and transfer information.

Bruce Lieberman
This series is personal ode to Hokusai - an ethereal
surfer's mantra. A response, non- photographic and mnemonic,
to the cliché surf imagery bombardment.
For each series of paintings, successive studies were done,
on location. Larger works were completed in the studio. All
begin on location.
Most of this series (sand, salt, acrylic, oil with charcoal)
were actually started on the beach in the wind and rain. The
environment is allowed to play an intrinsic part, imposing
itself on the material and a somewhat athletic process. The
canvas is often turned in various directions to allow the
effects of the sand and sea to take an active role in the
direction and development of the paintings. Sea water is
poured and splashed onto the beginning stages, obscuring
some passages while creating others. The sea and rain washed
away areas of paint while creating new opportunities to
exploit that once back in the studio will be further
developed.

The merging of histories and cultures in my work creates a
commentary on
government, terrorism, and wars. Both humorous and
disturbing it allows the
viewer to create his or her own opinions and interpretations
of the subject
matter. Weather through figurative or architectural
structures, the work speaks
with both intensity and sensitivity to its viewers.

This body of work depicts ancient Roman walls and
architecture. The sculpture relief's embrace a time long
forgotten. Visual parallels are drawn between classical
forms and the abstract. My inspiration is derived from trips
and photographs taken throughout Italy and the
Mediterranean.

presently resides with his family in Oakdale, Long Island.
He attended The New York Institute of Technology, Old
Westbury and Adelphi University, Garden City New York. He
has shown widely throughout New York and Connecticut and is
represented by The Viridian Artist's Gallery.
